Ben Rohu

Mechanical Engineering student at UBC. I design and build things that move and things that keep them cool, from a Formula Electric cooling system to 3D-printed precision gearboxes.

Drivetrain Cooling System Redesign

The car's single shared cooling loop for motors and inverters caused high pressure drop and put the inverters at risk of overheating. I redesigned it into two independent loops, which fixed both problems and cut the pump count.

Problem

  • One loop shared between motors and inverters, with high pressure drop across it
  • The inverters' maximum temperature is less than half the motors' ideal temperature, so sharing coolant put them at risk

Redesign

  • Split into separate motor and inverter loops
  • Added parallel tubing sections to the motor loop for more even cooling
  • Increased tube ID to lower pressure drop

Outcome

  • Both loops meet the thermal limits of their components
  • Flow rate can now be tuned for each loop independently
  • Reduced pumps from three to two
In progress: validating flow rate, pressure drop, and temperatures for both loops through benchtop and vehicle testing.

Coolant Catch Can

FSAE rules require a catch can to contain overflow from the liquid cooling system. I designed and manufactured ours, and an FSAE technical judge recognized it as the most compliant catch can inspected at competition.

Design

  • Modeled in SolidWorks to meet FSAE rulebook requirements for volume, mounting, and materials
  • 3D-printed PA12-CF body, waterjet-cut aluminum lid, and an O-ring seal

Outcome

  • Passed technical inspection with specific recognition from the judge
  • The sealing method was adopted for other cooling loop components

3D-Printed Harmonic Drive Gearbox

A low-backlash, non-backdriveable gearbox for a NEMA 17 stepper, built for precision robotics projects.

Design

  • 50:1 reduction designed in SolidWorks
  • Fully non-backdriveable, so it holds position without constant motor power
  • Near-zero backlash with a mostly 3D-printed wave generator, flexspline, and circular spline

Problem solving

  • Prototype had flexspline deflection and meshing issues
  • Traced the cause to flexspline geometry and material choice
  • Fixed it with small geometry changes and a more flexible, fatigue-resistant material

Two-Axis Pen Plotter IN PROGRESS

A stepper-driven X–Y plotter that turns images into drawings.

Design

  • Rack-and-pinion mechanism designed in SolidWorks, converting stepper rotation into precise X–Y motion
  • Mostly 3D-printed, with tolerance iterations for smooth travel on both axes

VEX "High Stakes" Competition Robot

I designed the full robot, from concept to final assembly, and built the first working prototype on my own.

Process

  • Did all robot CAD, from first concept to final assembly
  • Built the first prototype alone over the summer to validate subsystems and find weak points
  • Refined and rebuilt the competition version with teammates

Results

  • Design Award at the PYRS Robotics Competition
  • Placed 1st of 60 in the qualifying bracket and reached the quarterfinals
